Day 50 Umbrawarra Gorge/Pine Creek - 28 July 2009

8743kms, 34 degrees C, 5 snakes

It had to happen sooner or later. We had a bad day, and Grumpy Bear reappeared.

We now have a mobile library in the back of the truck of books, maps and brochures. We read them and make a call on where to go. Most of the time they have been accurate and wonderful but today was not one of those days.

It is possible that Umbrawarra Gorge is wonderful in the wet season, when there is water in it. Today it was dry, boring and covered in flies – if yesterday’s spot was called Butterfly Gorge, then today’s could be Fly Gorge. We set up the tent then headed off to the gorge. No water, difficult rocky walk to no great end and flies...
So we decided to pack up again and move to Pine Creek, by which time we had packed the tent at Douglas Daly, then put it up at Umbrawarra, then unpacked and re-erected it Pine Creek. After a few little glitches, Mr Bear was well and truly grumpy however Nicky had the answer – Gold XXXX at the Pine Creek Hotel!!

On a brighter note, we did see a Mehrtens Water Monitor in Fly Gorge and Nicky’s mackerel (caught by Mr Bear in Karumba when less grumpy) curry did a lot to lighten the mood!
